Architecture Republic is a young team of designers and architects breathing new life into old homes and designing sustainable state-of-the-art new homes.

We are passionate about sustainable design and love working in a wide range of styles. From retrofitting Canberra govvies to strawbale + rammed earth farmhouses, no two projects are the same.

We're looking for an experienced residential designer. Experience managing design projects is ideal but not essential. We want down to earth design flair, technical detailing knowledge and a good rapport with clients.

Based in the Southern Highlands, you will work with our other Southern Highlands designers in Moss Vale, NSW. Also featured will be occasional trips to Canberra to work with our Canberra team. There's also plenty of opportunity to work from home part of the time.

There's a lot to do, so no two days will be the same! As an architectural technician, you will support the project architects through the design, documentation and approvals/construction process. You will work collaboratively with them to realise the vision of the clients’ future home (in partnership with the rest of our design team). You'll assist the design team in project and task management, as well as solo work designing, reviewing designs, interpreting legislation, and long chats with clients and builders.

Hours are flexible but we are looking for someone who can work full time hours in a permanent position.

Great things about this job:

  • Flexible hours - although we need you to work around 38 hours per week (i.e. full-time), we don’t mind when you work those hours. Work around kids, appointments, etc.
  • Architectural registration - if you’re not already registered, we’ll help you get there through training and a range of design + management experience.
  • Responsibility - Choose your own priorities + manage your own day.
  • Friendly team - although we all work from home, we get together regularly, are friendly, love dogs and cups of tea.
  • Work on a variety of projects from coastal to countryside to suburban, from new homes to renovations to heritage homes.
  • Bring your ideas - we have a culture of listening to our team and including you in our business development
  • Collaborate with a variety of other designers and drafties to get the best design outcomes for clients
  • Align with your values - we are passionate about sustainability, value gender equality, and promote a fair and diverse workplace.

A few things we'd like you to do:

  • Designing houses - everything from small renovations to grand country houses, and from traditional construction to straw bales and rammed earth.
  • Checking others' work - from a design and technical point of view.
  • Sales - Attending initial consultations and client inquiries.
  • Contract administration - managing the paper trail that every construction project generates
  • Document + Information management
  • Reading and interpreting legislation + planning documents
  • Co-ordinating planning approvals + submissions with our office manager
  • Consultant Liaison (e.g. surveyors, engineers, planners)

A few things we'd like you to have:

  • A passion for houses and creating inviting spaces that people love living in
  • Digital native - “I don't know how to do that, but let me google it”
  • Proficiency in SketchUp and LayOut
  • Driver's licence + willingness to occasionally go for a long drive.
  • Relevant qualifications in architecture (e.g. B.Arch/M.Arch) with a strong technical focus (e.g. study of structural engineering or energy efficiency electives etc)
  • Experience in any of the following areas is a bonus, but not essential:
    • Residential design,
    • Designing for a wide range of climates including temperate coastal, highland/mountain, arid, semi-arid,
    • Small to medium commercial design
    • Master planning
    • Interior design
    • Working with heritage buildings
    • Construction detailing and specifying
    • Understanding and interpreting legislation and planning codes
  • Confidence (sometimes you'll need to keep the clients and builders on track!)
  • Enjoy working in a team of vibrant, young creative people.
  • COVID Vaccination
Salary starting at $60,000pa + super. Salary negotiable based on experience of applicant.
